Iraqi Dykedom

Yesterday in the presidential debate Mike Gravel commented that U.S. Soldiers had died in vain in the Vietnam War. Of course, he was implying that the same thing is happening in Iraq. Many of us have long argued that we never should have invaded Iraq, and that the mission has been botched by the political leadership. I personally am one who believes that militant Islamic fundamentalism poses a grave threat to the free world, and is the ideological battle of this century. I just think that Iraq was a real real stupid place to take it on.
But, I certainly do not think that the sons and daughters of the Republic are dying in vain in that god forsaken corner of the world.
If you had asked me yesterday to articulate my reasons for feeling that way, I might have struggled.
But, today I received a message from Girl Punch that gave me a real good answer.
Girl Punch is one of my favorite online lesbians. Since she is a soldier in Iraq, apparently no one has ever asked and she has never told—except on her blog:)
Recently Girl Punch was walking through a market in Baghdad and saw a video for sale.It was The L Word.
While, some of the fundies may want desperately to agree with my premise here, I am sure they do not see the importance or value of a video about hot LA lesbians being available in The Lands of Islam. In fact most would like it banned in America.
And though many of us feel the cost has been too high, there is no question there is a bit of liberty in Iraq, that would not be there but for our presence.

Becky I really like this post. As you may know, I am sure you have read my posts on lesbian, homosexuality, and heterosexuality and are aware that I am of the belief that it is wrong. As a Christian I truly live by "HATE THE SIN-NOT THE SINNER."
Having made that clear, I find an ironic surrealism that a lesbian video can be bought in Iraq.
Yes Becky, I may not agree with the video's message, but why kill the messenger of liberty and here's a novel thought, justice for all in Iraq.
Really great post Becky. Thanks for the heads up!
I added you to my blogroll Becky.
Layala,
Rather than get catty about that which we disagree about (after all I am a daily Mass goer and disagree with The Church about that issue) I'd rather just thank you for stopping by and giving a ditto for liberty and freedom.

I gave you and this post a mention here. Hope my readers will drop by and read it!

Becky, I am sorry you took that as catty. That was not my intent. I was just explaining my views since I believe we can embrace our differences and still find a happy medium where we can agree.
Actually I thought you, like me would find it refreshing that we can voice our values we hold dear and agree to disagree and applaud the end result which as you pointed out is liberty and freedom.
Sorry if you mistook my well meaning intent.
I didn't misunderstand--I was just being cute:)

Heh - is it bad that I haven't seen the L word but people in Iraq have? I live in Australia, where it's freely available, and even on free-to-air, and haven't gotten around to seeing it yet. =)
Becky,
I guess the million dollar question is: When we leave, will that little piece of liberty remain? Have we created a more fundamental set of fundamentalists by "cutting off the head"? I have no idea but it's hard to celebrate the few positives in Iraq when the future looks so bleak and uncertain.
p.s. Where should I report to for my spanking? :) .
Goldy, I have serious doubts--
But my point was no one has died in vain if the result was liberty. Perhaps the cost was too high for the amount of liberty achieved--but no one died or fought for nothing.
Whats more as fleeting as it may turn out to be I am romantic enough to believe that somehow, somewhere that moment of liberty will bear more fruit.

...I accidentally raised my hand absentmindedly....:P
RANDOM:
When was the last literary censure due to sexual content (of any orientation) in these parts I wonder? The Marquis perhaps?
I totally missed the commandment that said "Thou shalt not kiss thy neighbors lily if thou hath a lily on thine self". Of course its been a while since I've done any of that kind of reading.
Kiss Kiss
As a lesbian myself layla I find your attitude pretty condescending and rude. =) Hate your own 'sins' mate, but not mine. I've written about this attitude in my blog.
Taz, I totally understand where you are coming from on this. But, Layla is a whole lot more open minded than many of those that feel this way about homosexuality. So long as I am not attacked personally I can live with this.
She is certainly entitled to her religious beliefs--as wrong as I think they may be in this regard.
This type of thought process will inevitably lead to some other beliefs and actions I disagree with. And when that happens, as Layla knows, I have no problem challenging her reasoning.

Thanks for the props!
Actually, a common misconception of my blog is that I am still a soldier. I actually am a veteran now serving as a military consultant in Iraq. Just want to clarify that!
BTW that was me on an old blogger profile
After 24 years of marriage I find myself opposing my wife and my church's stand on homosexuality and I'm straight! I'm impressed when folks can disagree on an issue and still respect each other.
That's so sad and disrespectful to say soldiers died in vain in Vietnam. Just last month I was honored to point out my second cousins name on that war memorial.
I seldom have time to blog but a farewell to my cousin heading to Iraq now a second time prompted me to try and honor his commitment to duty recently on my seldom used yahoo 360 blog. It's was a sureal moment for me in some respects. If the address copies your welcome to read it.
It's theme parallel's the intended thoughts of the cliche from George Orwell on war, "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf."
Not sure the address will be pasted intact let me know if your interested.

Here's an interesting link for Christians who oppose homosexuality because 'the bible says so' - or for those who are standing up against those people (onya Jon):

homosexuality-bible-gay-christian
(it didn't fit properly, just string it all together in your browser and it should work).
Taz, the link there did not go through--but you have shamed me into doing something on this.
Stay tuned:)
