Breastfeeding at Applebee's Stupid Neighborhood

a2Corporations or their little petty employees often act like jerks. For example a lot of people, myself included, have been discussing the absurdity of escorting cute girls in miniskirts off airplanes.

An ignorant Applebees manager in Kentucky falls into this category as well. He got all bent out of shape when a Mom was breastfeeding in his stupid neighborhood. How many times do we have to go over this one until people get it?

A woman was discreetly breastfeeding her child in a corner booth. A waitress came over and told the lady that she had to cover up with a blanket because a customer had complained about indecent exposure.

First, Kentucky law specifically provides that breastfeeding can not be considered indecent exposure.

Second, it is not necessary that these corporations cater to the whims of their stupidest customers. That was what happened to Kyla Ebbert when Southwest ejected her for wearing a mini-skirt. Some morally righteous person was offended that an attractive woman was showing a little too much skin. Probably thought it would have life destructive effects on their precious little children.

For real, there is a whole cadre of frumpy Moms who are applauding Southwest for taking a strong stand on good proper moral dress.

Same deal in Kentucky.

The manager should have politely told the complainer to shut the fuck up. Not harass the Mom.

Anyway, this Saturday there are going to be some women protesting outside Applebee Neighborhoods across the nation. And I think they will be feeding their babies right there outside the restaurants as well.

It may be an isolated incident, like I hope the mini-skirt deal is, but it is important these boys and girls get called on this stuff. And that the word is passed down the corporate ladder, so that power hungry ignoramuses on the front lines get the message. And the only way that happens is if the message is pounded into the these corporations in a big way.

You can help out by shooting off an an email to Applebees and letting them know this concern about breastfeeding is just oh so lame:

Because they don't want you to really contact them they don't post their email addresses so you have to fill out a “guest relations” form, but if you have the time it would be nice to send them a little love note.

The form starts here at the bottom of the page: Guest Relations Form

And for those of you who will surely bring up the issue of being discreet--get over it. For one thing, this woman was. But more importantly if seeing a woman nurse an infant brings out even the slightest prurient interest in you, then you are sick and in dire need of some therapy.

As far as I'm concerned I don't even think that she needs to be discreet. She's feeding her child. You don't want to eat under a blanket, why does the baby. I hate this type of stuff. Weird people offended by a totally natural thing.

I understand the SW thing a bit more bc society as a whole does show too much skin (as far as I'm concerned). And women dress way too provocatively for my sons to see. But, I still think they were wrong too.

And to set the record straight to all those that say "she had to pull the skirt down when she stood up so it must have been too short", when's the last time you wore a denim skirt? They ALWAYS ride up when you sit, no matter the length. I have one that goes to the middle of my knees and I pull it down every time I stand. That's just what happens!

Here's the text from a postcard being made available in Lex to send in - in case you just want to copy and paste to tell the douche bags where to get off -

Dear Mr. Mike Scanlon:

Due to Applebee’s employees violating KRS 211.755 on June 14, 2007

re: Mrs. Brooke Ryan and her infant son

I am asking Applebee’s:

1) to make a clear national policy that mothers have a right to breastfeed in their stores without being asked to move, hide, cover-up or leave

2) to train all employees that breastfeeding is different from other behaviors that customers might complain about (such as loud music, offensive language, etc.), and that employees are never to ask a breastfeeding mother to move, cover up, or leave. Instead employees can advise the complaining customer to avert their eyes or move to a different part of the store

3) to make the public aware of this policy

I will not be dining at any Applebee’s restaurants until a public apology is made and Applebee’s changes its stance on breastfeeding. Eatin’ is not good in the neighborhood if you are a breastfeeding baby.

What ya think Becky... should i head to the nearest Applebees and show them what breast feeding in all about? There is one that is walking distance from my house...

I've got it down where I can feed both twins at the same time... but here in North Carolina public breastfeeding in also protected by law.... but it would be interesting to see how they react.

I live in the exurbs and actually used to eat at Applebee's occasionally. (Please don't hate me) But, back when I was trying to diet and would order their lite selections, no one in the store (including the general manager)could tell me if my favorite lite selections included Splenda (which is a migraine trigger for me) I contacted them through the guest relations page on their website -- a couple of times -- in 2005. I have yet to get a response. I would rather lick spit off the sidewalk than eat at Applebee's again.

For the life of me, I can never understand why people feel the need to be offended by breasts. Especially when they have a baby attached? This topic always gets me fired up...

My doctor told me that suppressing my masturbation urges could be dangerous and being as it is a natural bodily function I plan on whupping it out at the local applebees. Sure hope they have "courtesy" lotion and napkins.

I was going to delete the above comment. But I am leaving it so the naive and sheltered will know how offensive some people can be.

A lesbian who would rather see breasts in public rather than male genitalia, what a shocker. LOL
