Homeschooling in the Police State

homeschool x

a2 Since the licensed teachers in the public schools are doing such a dynamite job, some California judges want to require that parents who homeschool be fully accredited and approved by the Department of Education.

Not surprisingly, teacher unions applauded the ruling. But the seismic shift on the Left Coast, has sent shock waves throughout the nation.

homeschool 7 A few people acted surprised that this lack of tolerance would occur in the Land of Milk and Honey-- the birthplace of the modern free speech movement, where medical marijuana is legal, same sex couples have full rights, along with every other nonconforming community. And at one time California led the nation in not standing in the way of parents who wished to homeschool.

But one community Progressives do not wish to afford the same degree of tolerance to, are Christian fundamentalists. Of course not, by any stretch, are all homeschoolers evangelicals, but it is a large component.

homeschool 4 Most of these parents object to not only the lack of discipline in the schools and their teaching of such things as evolution—but the permissiveness of the culture.

homeschool 6 Indeed, the California ruling arose out of a child protection case, where the Christian parents were concerned about their fourteen year old daughter, who was rebelling in a way which was not consistent with their principles.

They homeschooled, instructed her in their church's take on Christian values, imposed some strict rules, would not permit her to dress like Britney Spears and at times enforced their edicts with Biblically-endorsed spankings.

Without more facts it is impossible to know whether this was abuse or not. But it is really a separate issue. How would the risk of abuse be diminished simply because the mother was credentialed?

homeschool 2 The court did not make any finding that the education received by the girl was objectively inadequate. They were much more concerned about her proper socialization:

“A primary purpose of the educational system is to train school children in good citizenship, patriotism and loyalty to the state and the nation as a means of protecting the public welfare.”

In other words, the purpose of the public schools is to indoctrinate children into a particular communal ethos promoted by the state, whether or not the parents agree on the specifics of what the “public welfare” entails.

Presumably if parents obtain the proper credentials they will not only not beat their kids, but instill the secular values of the Nanny and Welfare States.

nazi teacher This is frightening stuff.

There are really two primary purposes of compulsory public eduction.

First, over the period of twelve years the mindset of children can be molded into one of conformity and obedience to authority.

Second, public schooling enables government officials to fill children’s minds with officially approved political, historical, and economic doctrine.

homeschool 9 No wonder that Hitler, Stalin, Mao Zedong, and Mussolini were enthusiastic supporters of compulsory public education.

While I may not agree with all of the curriculum or teaching methods of the homeschoolers, I am not willing to assume that the State of California has a monopoly on the truth, or the means of educating children.

The idea that a teacher is competent, just because they are credentialed, is laughable. And it is not true that a person with no formal educational training is incapable of teaching their children.

homeschool 1 Studies have shown time and again that, on average, homeschooled children out achieve their public school counterparts in every single measurable way. There is now, partially due to the Internet, a wealth of material available for homeschooling parents to use.

homeschool 3 The vast majority of colleges eagerly accept students who were schooled at home, including the Ivy league. A Harvard University admissions officer said most of their home educated students “have done very well....they usually are very motivated in what they do.”

Rather than worrying about the education being received by homeschooled students, it would be more productive if the State of California, and the teachers unions, worked on cleaning up their own house.

Ok, I agree, but does it really surprise anyone that homeschooled students on average outperform public school students? I'm sure many great parents have students who underperform, but I can guarantee public schools are dragged down by the children of parent's who simply don't care. Homeschooling in and of itself is a sign that a parent cares about their child's education and therefore I would expect better scores. Teacher's cannot raise our children. There is a reason HOMEwork exists.

I wish the Founding Fathers had considered the issue of compulsory state education. I'm pretty sure there would have been an eleventh amendment in the Bill of Rights.

Not that this wouldn't have been ignored by the rulers who take such good care of us today.

In Pennsylvania, Commonwealth Law provides that accredited, charter schools are entitled to a portion of the per capita funds allotted for a student in this student's home school district. This has given rise to cyber-charter schools, with an online curriculum that often exceeds the PA Dept of Education standards.

Yet, year after year, local school districts fight against handing over about 80% of the their per capita costs to these cyber schools, claiming they are 'losing money' and have no say in the cyber curriculum standards, etc.

That the local districts aren't losing money since the student isn't in their buildings, and that the curriculum of cyber's isn't their concern but that of the Dept of Ed. appears to be no concern at all to the local editorial pages. And now there's pending legislation that will reduce the 80% to a flat rate (~$4000) which will cause the cybers to fail.

Indeed, with ~20% of the funding for a student who isn't attending classes, you'd think they'd want more cyber charter students!

Even in the birthplace of liberty, there are foes against freedom of education choices.

Becky, GREAT article. I went to Digg it, and I got a BIG RED ANGRY notice that said I can't submit your URL's because of adults-only content.

I
m so pissed off right now I feel like --- well I can't say publicly what I feel like doing but this is so freakin' wrong. Digg really is just for boys isn't it?! I'm going to tell the women at wowOwow about this travesty.

And I've been digging stuff by my friend Kevin at Pointless Banter, which is just about as adult as your stuff. Why isn't his URL down too?

If you would give me permission, I'd like to repost this at my blog and digg it from there.

My wife is home-schooled and she is one of the smartest and brightest individuals I have every met. She graduated with high honors in chemistry and biology from college. I'm sure the teachers union was very satisfied with this violation of the first amendment.

Hi Paula, So good to see you.

Yes, Digg banned me sometime ago. They started with their burying brigades—and then one day there was an image of a topless girl—never mind that the words accompanying the boobie imagery was a cranky feminist critique—and they went running to Mommy Digg, and I was summarily banned.

The boys at Digg object that I am a lesbian with a brain, and often my opinions are at variance with those of the dumb young neo-geeks that hang at Digg. I am not alone in being banned under this ruse of “adult content.”

You can read more about me (and the others) at Why Digg Don't Digg Me and Digg Strikes Again

If you are able to get through to Kevin Rose or Digg management that is great—I am not, as I say, an isolated incident. They totally ignored my efforts to get answers—and as far as I know the efforts of other people who were concerned about this.

I've three in-laws who homeschool successfully with no teaching degree. I've a wife with one and she failed do to lack of "classroom management".

As for the biblical edict, I've integrated a logical counter to that one which I'll share when the subject context is appropriate.

Good blog and comments. I do agree the motivation to study comes from home not public education.

Twenty-Seven years ago I set my eyes on a beautiful blue eyed blonde physics major in the student union at the university I attended in the pacific northwest. I got the gumption to approach her as she was studying. She smiled and was very friendly. She always said hello to me as we passed each other in the student union. One day while chatting she asked me if I'd like to go to church with her. It was then that I learned she was Pentacostal. I declined given I was triple majoring in weekend boosefrsts drinking Henry Weinhardts beer, smoking hydroponic buds and listening to Robert Cray and Curtis Salgado playing blues. One summer day I noticed her and a girlfriend of hers sitting at a table at the union and I brought them some lemonade. I greeted them offering the lemonade which they appreciated and I made conversation asking what they were doing. The object of my desire explained that they were praying for her girlfriend who was sitting next to her. I thought to myself, "Gee, I think I have a nice heart and even though I'm not a particularly religious person my sincere appeal to the great creator should be worth something." So, I asked what was wrong, she said, "We'll we're praying for god to heal Elizabeth's urinary infection". I almost spit out my lemonade from laughing (given it was my experience that was often a woman thing) but thankfully I didn't be a horses ass and laugh. I said, I hope god hears you and went on my way.

Anyway, she later married a guy from her church. They went off as Missionary's and after a few years, they started a family where they home schooled their son who grew up to test among the top of the college board exams and then went on to attend a top engineering school.

Sometimes I wonder about what a perfect life she seemed to find.

One thing that I did learn from meeting her was it's a better world having god in peoples lives; provided however, it's not perverted as Obama's Pastor Wright seems to have done as well as race-baiters like the so called Rev's Sharpton and Jackson.

Having met her, I have a lot of respect for fundamentalists. The state should bud out.

Respectfully,
DW

Wow, i always love your articles!
Anyway I believe homeschooling is a right we have as parents. The foundinhg fathers would have never been in support of forced state run education, especially as the monopoly it is by forcing you to pay high taxes for education which limits your ability to afford private school. So some are left with homeschooling as there only option. As you pointed out the state wants to shape as many minds as it can with its own agenda.
"All forms of tampering with human beings, getting at them, shaping them against there will to your own pattern, all thought control and conditioning is, therefore, a denial of that in men which makes them men and their values ultimate." Isaiah Berlin
